What is Lasik eyes surgery? Lasik surgery involves the use of a laser to perform a procedure that will correct a patient’s vision by cutting layers of tissue from the cornea. This sounds a lot worse than it really is. Depending on what kind of vision correction being performed will determine what procedure the surgeon will perform.

  • A patient with nearsightedness will have excess tissue from the cornea removed to place the point of focus directly on the retina instead of in front of the retina.

  • A patient with farsightedness will have tissue removed from outside the central optical zone of the cornea this will allow for the point of focus to be directly placed on the retina instead of behind it.

  • Astigmatism is corrected by reshaping the cornea to resemble a basketball instead of a football. This procedure may be performed along with either one of the other procedures.

Anesthesia will be used to prevent any discomfort to the patient. This is in the form of eye drop. These drops will be placed in the eye before the procedure will begin allowing time for the eye to become numb. The surgeon will then place eyelid holders on the patient’s eyes to prevent the patient from blinking during the procedure. The surgeon will then proceed to perform the procedure necessary to correct your vision.

Lasik is surgery and just like any other there are risks though an occurrence is rare. If the patient has had troubles with past surgeries they will want to discuss any possible complication prior to the surgery. Many patients will experience slight side effects after the surgery. Most side effects will clear up with in a few weeks of surgery.  Some of the most common side effects that patients experience are dry eyes, spots, and blurred vision.
