The first thing to remember about Lasik is that it is a surgery. Your eyes are the greatest asset that you posses. Sight is a gift that should not be taken for granted. That is why a potential patient should research any facility or institute before proceeding with the procedure. It is also important to remember that you should not solely base your decision for Lasik surgery based on the cost. Many times the cost of the procedure is based on the experience of the surgeon. For example, the most experience the surgeon has the higher the cost of the procedure. You pay for the knowledge that the surgeon has obtained over the years. The less experience the lower the cost. What is Lasik eye surgery? Lasik eye surgery uses a laser to perform a procedure that will reshape a patient’s cornea to correct vision irregularities. This procedure is done by ophthalmologist. The first patent granted to an individual by the United States was given in 1989. Since this time there have been numerous advances in technology to allow for a more precise procedure for the patient. What will happen during the procedure? The procedure being used on the patient will depend of what kind of vision correction the patient will need. There different procedures for different kinds of correction surgery. All patients will be given eye drops that contain an anesthesia. Eyelid holders will be placed on the patient’s eyelids to prevent blinking during the procedure. Patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism all qualify as candidates for Lasik eye surgery. Patients who experience the following will have specific procedures performed: - Nearsightedness is corrected by removing tissue from the cornea. A flap on the cornea is made by the laser. The cornea is then reshaped by removing tissue from the cornea. The flap is then replaced, and it is held in place by natural adhesion until healing is complete.
- Farsightedness is corrected by the removal of tissue from outside the central optical zone. This will allow the point of focus to be placed directly on the retina. The same procedure for creating and replacing the flap is done in all Lasik eye surgery.
- Astigmatism is corrected by reshaping the cornea to resemble a basketball as opposed to a football. The same procedure for creating and replacing the flap is done in all Lasik eye surgery.
