Are You A Candidate For Lasik Eye Surgery? |
|
Lasik eye surgery has changed the world of ophthalmology. New technology now allows surgeons to customize the surgery to each patient individually. This is done by a 3D map this generated by the ladarvision that sends light waves that pass through the eye. The irregularities in the eye bend the light waves. This shows the surgeons where the aberrations or distortions are located. The map produced allows the surgeon to perform a more precise procedure for the patient. This can greatly increase the quality of vision in the patient. Candidates must meet certain requirements to be considered for Lasik eye surgery. Not every Lasik vision center will have the same requirements, but these are some of the most common. Here are the more common requirements: - 18 years or older
- No eye conditions that will effect the healing process
- No health conditions that would put the patient at risk during surgery.
- Must have vision correction prescription for one year
Every Lasik surgeon will have a list of certain requirements that he or she considers necessary for patients to meet. It is important for you to discuss such requirements with your doctor or surgeon. Candidates for Lasik eye surgery are patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Procedures can be performed for any of these vision irregularities. Surgeons perform Lasik surgery differently depending on what vision irregularity the patient may have. - Nearsightedness - Patients that have nearsightedness will have a cornea that is too steep. It is corrected by removing tissue from the cornea. This will place the point of focus directly on the retina instead of in front of the retina.
- Farsightedness – Patients with farsightedness will have a flatter cornea. Tissue will be removed from outside the central optical zone. This will allow for the point of focus to be directly on the retina instead of behind the retina.
- Astigmatism – Patients with astigmatism will have a cornea that is shaped closely to a football. This is corrected by reshaping the cornea. This will make the cornea resemble a basketball. This procedure may be performed along with other vision correction surgery.
Patients who are interested in Lasik surgery should discuss with the surgeon the likelihood of candidacy. Most patients will be a candidate for Lasik surgery as long as they do not have any other major health conditions that will effect the patient during the procedure.
